John C. Garand Memorabilia Sale #3 is comprised of 22 military manuals. All of the manuals offered were the personal property of Mr. John C. Garand. A review of the manuals presented is quite revealing. Most of the manuals pertain to early 20th Century machine guns (items M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, M11, M12, M13). In his role as designer of the first successful semiautomatic battle rifle, it is obvious Mr. Garand would have found the design of these machine guns to be of useful reference. As a rifle designer he would also have been familiar with the existing service rifle, the M1903, of the day (item M1). Other manuals would understandably be in the library of any designer employed by Springfield Armory (items M14, M16, M17, M19, M20, M21, M22). Perhaps the most thought provoking is item M2, FM 21-40, Defense Against Chemical Attack, September 7, 1942. Was this issued to Armory employees during the early years of the War as a result of a feared attack by Germany? Food for thought.
Sale #3 is a
fixed price plus 10% Buyers Premium rather than an auction.
All articles sold include a Certificate of Authenticity signed by
Richard N. Garand (Mr. Garand’s son) and Scott A. Duff. This Certificate guarantees that the item
had in fact been the personal property of Mr. John C. Garand.
